Evaluating Contact Lens Fits Simulation

This course is in power point format and includes multiple simulations to aid you in the understanding of how to evaluate contact lens movement, centration, and fluorescein patterns that you will observe in the slit lamp.

This course has been awarded 1 JCAHPO credit hour. It is intended for beginning and intermediate levels.

After completing this section the student should be able to do the following:

  • List the 2 main types of contact lenses
  • List 3 materials that contact lenses have been or are made of
  • Define these 3 properties of soft contact lenses- thickness, water content, and oxygen permeability
  • List the 3 parameter that must be included in a contact lens RX
  • Identify a correctly written contact lens RX
  • Describe the parameter for the diameter of a soft contact lens
  • Identify what are steep versus flat base curves for soft lenses
  • List the 3 characteristics that must be evaluated on a soft contact lens fit
  • Describe each of the 3 characteristics for a good soft contact lens fit
  • Identify good centration for a soft contact lens fit
  • Identify good movement for a soft contact lens fit
  • Identify good limbal coverage for a soft contact lens fit
  • Describe how to figure out the power needed for a soft contact lens given the trial lens power and the over refraction
  • List steps in soft contact lens insertion and removal
  • Define what wearing time for a new soft contact lens wearer should be and how it should increase over time
  • Describe the additional 2 characteristics that must be evaluated for a soft toric contact lens fit
  • Define the LARS rule
  • Apply the LARS rule with soft toric contact lens fits
  • Figure out the new power needed for a soft toric contact lens given the trial lens power, position of the hash marks, and the over refraction
  • List 3 ways RGP lenses fit differently than soft contact lenses
  • Describe good movement for an RGP lens
  • Describe good centration for an RGP lens
  • Describe a good fluorescein pattern for an RGP lens
  • Identify flat lens fluorescein patterns for RGP lenses
  • Identify steep/tight lens fluorescein patterns for RGP lenses
  • Identify a well fitting lens fluorescein pattern for RGP lenses
  • Identify how to change a steep/tight RGP lens
  • Identify how to change a flat RGP lens
  • List the steps for insertion and removal of an RGP lens
